Institute of Cybernetics at TTU

Department of mechanics and applied mathematics

Research and studies of mechanics and applied mathematics in the Institute of Cybernetics are concentrated into the Department of Mechanics and Applied Mathematics.

Department is the kernel of the Centre for Nonlinear Studies (CENS) joining several research groups interested in wave dynamics, nonlinear dynamics, solitons, biomechanics, biophysics, cell energetic, cardiac arrhythmias, heart rate variability, fractality, thermodynamics , acoustodiagnostics, musical acoustics, etc.

Department is the seat for Estonian National Committee for Mechanics.

Laboratory of photoelasticity

Laboratory of Photoelasticity has 40 years of experience in measuring stress in glass articles, especially in articles of complicated shape. For that Laboratory has developed modern measurement technology as well as automatic polariscopes which are easy to handle and can be used in the vicinity of the production line.

For measuring stresses in axisymmetric glass articles a new method, based on integrated photoelasticity has been developed. The method has been successfully used for measuring stresses in drinking glasses, bottles, neck tubes of the CRT glass bulbs, lamps, optical fibre preforms, etc., for many companies. New projects concern development of photoelastic tomography for stress measurement in glass articles of arbitrary shape and of a portable scattered light polariscope for thickness stress measurement in flat glass.

Institute of Marine Systems at TTU

Marine Systems Institute at Tallinn Technical University carries out research of Baltic Sea water and material exchange processes and their impact on Estonian coastal waters, on dynamics of turbulent processes and nonlinear waves, and on estimation of ecological conditions of Estonian coastal waters and lakes by optical methods.

Biomedical Engineering Centre of TTU

The Biomedical Engineering Centre (BMEC) of TTU is a research centre for interdisciplinary studies on biomedical engineering and concentrates the research efforts in BME and related areas. The BMEC comprises of the Chair of Radio Physics and Chair of Biomedical Engineering as a nucleus and associated members.

Chair of Geometry Topology of Tartu University

Chair of Geometry and Topology is a part of the Institute of Pure Mathematics in the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. The research is concentrated to the generalization of the exterior calculus and study of the symmetries of differential equations and dynamical systems.
