SUMMARY:Irina Nikolkina\: Savage-Hutter model for avalanche dynamics in inclined channels\: analytical solutions
DESCRIPTION:The Savage-Hutter model is applied to describe gravity dri
ven shallow water flows in\ninclined channels of parabolic-like shapes
modeling avalanches moving in mountain\nvalleys or landslide motions
in underwater canyons. The Coulomb (sliding) friction term\nis include
d in the model. Several analytical solutions describing the nonlinear
dynamics of\navalanches are obtained\: the nonlinear deformed (Riemann
) wave\, the dam break problem\,\nself-similar solutions and others. S
ome of them extend the known solution for an\ninclined plate (one-dime
nsional geometry). The cross-section shape of the inclined\nchannels s
ignificantly influences the speed of avalanche propagation and charact
eristic\ntime of dynamical processes. Obtained analytical solutions ca
n be used to test numerical\nmodels and to give insights into the stru
cture of avalanche flow and to highlight basic\nmechanisms of avalanch
 e dynamics.
