World Scientific has published a new book by Arkadi Berezovski, Jüri Engelbrecht and Gerard A. Maugin

NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF WAVES AND FRONTS IN INHOMOGENEOUS SOLIDS

This book shows the advances methods of numerical simulation of waves and fronts propagation in inhomogeneous solids and introduces related important ideas associated with tyhe application of numerical methods for these problems. Great care has been taken throughout the book to seek a balamce between the thermomechanical analysis  and numerical techniques. Itis suitable for advances undergraduate and graduate courses in continuum mechanics and ebgineering. Necessary prerequisites for this text are basic continuum mechanics and thermodynamics. Some elementary knowledge of numerical methods for partial differential equations is also preferable.

APPLIED WAVE MATHEMATICS.

SELECTED TOPICS IN SOLIDS, FLUIDS AND MATHEMATICAL METHODS

This volume consists of twelve contributions related tp the EU Marie Curie Transfer of Knowledge Project Cooperation of Estonian and Norwegian Scientific Centres within Mathematics and its Appplications, CENS-CMA (2005-2009).

The structure of the book reflects the distribution of topics addressed:

Part I Waves in SolidsAWM Quak

Part II Mesoscopic Theory

Part III Exploiting the Dissipation Inequality

Part IV Waves in Fluids

Part V Mathematical Methods

The papers are written in a tutorial style, intended  for non-specialist researchers and students, where the authors communicate their own experiences in tackling a problem that is currently of interest in the scientific community. The goal was to produce a book, which highlights the importance of applied mathematics and which can be used for educational purposes, such as material for a course or a  seminar

microstructured materials: inverse problems

  • Mathematical modelling is based on physical principles
  • Physical models are interwoven with inverse problemscda_displayimage.jpg
  • A novel concept of using solitary waves for NDE is propoposed
Complex, microstructured materials are widwly used in industry and technology and include alloys, ceramics and composites. Focusing on non-destructive evaluation (NDE), this book explores in detail the mathematical modeling and inverse problems encountered when using ultrasound to investigate heterogeneous microstructured  materials. The outstanding  features if the text are firstly, a clear description of both linear and nonlinear mathematical models derived for modeling the propagation of ultrasonic deformation waves,  and secondly, the provision of solutions to the corresponding inverse problems that determine the physical parameters of the models. The data are related  to nonlinearrities at both macro- and micro-leve, as well as to dispersion. The authors' goal has been to construct algorithms that allow us to determine the parameters within which we are required to characterize microstructure. To achieve this, the authors not only use conventional harmonic waves, but aöso propose a novel methodology based on using .solitary waves in NDE. The book analyzes the uniqueness and stability of the solutions, in addition to numerical examples
